Solutions&Co is an initiative of Sparknews,
a social business which strengthens the impact of positive initiatives worldwide.
Sparknews is a social enterprise dedicated to amplifying positive change by working at the crossroads of social and environmental innovation, news media and the corporate world. We source innovative initiatives that tackle some of the biggest issues our planet is facing to build impactful ecosystems and raise awareness on the UN global goals. We create content, programs and events around these initiatives and we connect entrepreneurs, media outlets, and companies to foster action, both in the business world and in civil society.
Business Newspapers Spotlight Entrepreneurial Solutions to Climate Change
Since Paris Climate Agreement reached at COP21, the world’s media outlets have focused a lot of attention on climate change and its effects on the planet. While many newspapers are reporting on current and upcoming disasters, only a few actually write about potential solutions.
Yet, ingenious individuals, cities, governments, visionary startups and companies are already developing efficient ways to tackle climate change.
Thanks to hydropower facilities and other renewable energy sources, Costa Rica has managed to produce nearly all its electricity for most of the year without fossil fuels.
A Californian company has made several hundreds of millions of USD in revenue by selling eco-designed clothing using only organic cotton, or chlorofibres.
In Kenya, a common nut has proven to be a valuable and scalable source of biofuel.
A Swiss aeronaut succeeded in flying 40,000 km around the world in a solar-powered airplane without using a drop of fuel. From Denmark to Colombia, industrial parks are turning into productive symbioses where the waste of one factory is used as a resource by another one, providing both efficiency and profit to all stakeholders.
Today, for the fourth edition of Solutions&Co, Les Echos joins Sparknews and more than 20 international business newspapers to bring you stories of more than 50 such pioneers. They might be engineers, designers, bureaucrats or entrepreneurs. What they all share is a talent for finding business-driven solutions to climate change issues.
Over the past three years, Sparknews has been developing what we call “impact journalism” with a global network of leading newspapers. We ask each newspaper to track down innovative projects close to home and then share these stories with the others. As a result, readers in Europe can take inspiration from African, Asian or American initiatives, and vice versa.
The media is essential in bringing these innovations to light and amplifying their impact. Companies can also serve as an important ally, which is why we are working with The B Team, an organization co-founded by Sir Richard Branson and Jochen Zeitz and comprising 19 business leaders including Paul Polman, Ratan Tata and Muhammad Yunus. They are committed to a “Plan B” for capitalism that combines profit, people and the planet.
Finally, you—the reader—can participate in Solutions&Co and help turn the tide on climate change. Become an influencer, share a story of an innovative project that inspires you, or recommend business solutions that deserve to be featured in the next Solutions&Co supplement (#Ideas4Climate on Twitter). You can also send us your comments by email at contact@sparknews.com
We believe that positive change is underway. But it’s only by joining together that we can step up its pace and scale to create a better future.
